Partial or complete renovation?
A new shower does not always require the same work as an entirely new bathroom. Discuss what you want to keep, what no longer works and which installations need checking. A different layout or ageing pipes may require a more extensive renovation.
From bath to shower: check the floor first
Have the drainage, available floor depth and waterproofing assessed before choosing a shower. A step-free shower is not feasible in every existing floor. Record the workable solution and required connections in the quote.
Small bathroom: measure before choosing
Note the dimensions, door swing, clearances and positions of water supplies and drains. Keeping existing connections may limit disruptive work, but must suit the proposed layout and the condition of the installation.
What can stay and what needs replacing?
List the bath, shower, toilet, basin and taps you want to keep or replace. Have the underlying surfaces and connections checked too: new fixtures alone will not resolve a damp or pipework problem.
What should you prepare for the first conversation?
Photos of the current bathroom, measurements, your preferred layout and a list of items to keep. Mention whether this is your only bathroom and whether access is via stairs or a lift. Discuss protection of the home and use of the room during the work.
What should the written quote include?
Ask for removal, waste disposal, pipework, waterproofing, ventilation, electrical work, fixtures and finishes to be listed separately. Agree who supplies materials, what checks are included and how unexpected work will be approved. Record the schedule and any temporary facilities too.
