Water heater replacement in Belgium: what does it cost in 2026?

Short answer: According to economie-energie.be, replacing a water heater in 2026 costs roughly €400–1,500 for an electric tank, €800–2,000 for a gas storage heater and €2,000–4,500 for a heat pump water heater, all installed. Other sources differ. The big gap is in running costs: a heat pump water heater uses 2 to 3 times less electricity.

What does a water heater replacement cost by type?

According to economie-energie.be, an electric tank costs €400–1,500 and a heat pump water heater €2,000–4,500, installation included; other sources are higher (see table). Sources differ and do not always say whether VAT is included, so they are listed separately below rather than blended.

Gas takes longer to install because a new gas supply pipe and flue are often needed (Homedeal).

Electric, gas or heat pump: what is the difference?

Electric is cheap to buy but costly to run, gas is the reverse, and a heat pump water heater is the most efficient but the dearest to install.

Electric, gas and heat pump water heaters compared
TypeLifespan (economie-energie.be)Key points
Electric10 – 15 yearsSimple to install, no mandatory servicing, but the most energy-hungry
Gas (storage)10 – 15 yearsCheaper to run than electric; needs a gas connection, flue and annual servicing by an approved technician
Heat pump15 – 20 yearsUses 2 to 3 times less than electric; high purchase price, needs space and makes some noise (Homedeal)

Another source (elektrischeboiler.be) quotes 15 to 25 years in general. Real lifespan depends on water quality, usage and maintenance.

What tank size does your household need?

A common rule of thumb is about 50 litres per person: 100 L for a couple, 150 L for three people, 200 L for four. That is the guideline from economie-energie.be. Electric tanks come in 50 to 300 L.

Other sources are more generous. Homedeal advises at least 80 L, and 150 L if there is a bath. Zonr uses 200 L for 1 to 3 people and 300 L for 4 or more.

Heat pump water heater price by tank size, installation and 6% VAT included, for homes older than 10 years (Zonr, July 2026)
Tank sizeHousehold (per Zonr)Price
200 L1 – 3 people€2,500 – 3,500
300 L4 or more people€3,500 – 4,500

An oversized tank keeps more water hot for nothing, so choose based on your real usage.

What does it cost to run per year?

According to economie-energie.be, a heat pump water heater saves roughly €300 to €500 per year compared with a conventional tank. These figures are indicative and depend on your electricity tariff and usage.

Because a heat pump water heater costs more to buy, payback can take several years. Work it out with your own consumption.

Repair or replace: when, and what about the anode?

The condition of the unit decides, not age alone. A leaking tank is not fixed by descaling and usually has to be replaced (Lorenzo Chauffage).

Checking the anode and descaling can extend a unit's life (economie-energie.be). The anode protects the tank from corrosion. There is no standard Belgian interval: it depends on the model, water hardness, temperature and usage.

What drives the price?

Tank size, type, brand and the state of the installation explain most of the price gap.

VAT and grant for a new water heater

A heat pump water heater gets 6% VAT when supply and installation are invoiced by the same professional to a private customer; a unit bought without installation stays at 21%. According to VCN (citing FPS Finance circulars), this applies in homes older than 10 years, and from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2030 in newer homes too (provided the unit carries an EU energy label).

Flanders has a Mijn VerbouwPremie grant for heat pump water heaters. The amount depends on your income category and on the date you apply. For applications filed from 1 March 2026, the grant is €450 for categories 1 and 2, €1,050 for category 3 and €1,200 for category 4, each capped at a percentage of the invoice excl. VAT (vlaanderen.be). Check the exact amount in the simulator at vlaanderen.be/mijn-verbouwpremie. For Brussels and Wallonia, see the official portals renolution.brussels and wallonie.be.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Belgium?

According to economie-energie.be, about €400–1,500 for an electric tank and €2,000–4,500 for a heat pump water heater, installed. Other sources give higher figures, sometimes excluding VAT. Always compare quotes on the same basis.

When should a water heater be replaced?

When the tank leaks, corrosion is advanced, or repair no longer pays off. Descaling does not fix a leaking tank. Have a professional assess the unit. According to economie-energie.be, electric tanks last 10 to 15 years.

How much is a heat pump water heater?

Zonr gives €2,500–3,500 for 200 L and €3,500–4,500 for 300 L, installation and 6% VAT (homes older than 10 years) included. economie-energie.be gives €2,000–4,500. Price varies mainly with tank size, brand and the installation room.

What water heater size does my household need?

As a rule of thumb about 50 litres per person: 100 L for two, 150 L for three, 200 L for four (economie-energie.be). Zonr uses 200 L for 1 to 3 people and 300 L from four. With a bath, more capacity is useful.

Is a heat pump water heater cheaper to run?

Yes. It uses 2 to 3 times less electricity than an electric tank. According to economie-energie.be it saves €300–500 per year. Whether the higher price pays back depends on your consumption and electricity price.

What VAT applies to a new water heater?

6% for a heat pump water heater when supply and installation are invoiced by the same professional to a private customer. A standard electric tank gets 6% in a home older than 10 years. A unit without installation is at 21% (VCN).
