How much does a heat pump cost in Belgium in 2026? Prices by type, payback and renovation
Short answer: In Belgium in 2026, an installed heat pump costs roughly €2,000–12,000 for air-to-air, €5,000–18,000 for air-to-water (usually €8,000–18,000) and €15,000–30,000+ for ground-source. Installer sites put the payback of an air-to-water unit at around 10–15 years. In a renovation, insulation and the heat-emission system matter most: underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators.

What does a heat pump cost by type?
Air-to-water is the standard choice and most Belgian sources put it at €8,000–18,000 installed. Air-to-air is cheaper; ground-source is clearly dearer because of the drilling.
| Type | Price range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Air-to-air | €2,000–12,000 | Single split €2,000–4,500, multi-split €6,000–10,000. Does not heat radiators and gives no domestic hot water. |
| Air-to-water | €5,000–18,000 | Most sources: €8,000–18,000. The low end applies to small, well-insulated homes. |
| Hybrid (heat pump + boiler) | €8,000–13,000 | Often lets you keep existing radiators. |
| Ground-source | €15,000–30,000+ | Drilling alone costs €10,000–24,000 and, according to one source, comes on top of the unit and installation. |
Sources disagree: one gives air-to-water at €5,000–9,000, another at €8,000–18,000. We therefore show the wider range; the gap depends on capacity, finish level and what the quote includes. Check on each quote whether VAT is included.
Air-to-water heat pump price: what is included?
For an air-to-water unit the budget depends mainly on capacity and on whether hot water is included. Heating only in a small insulated home sits at the low end.
| Situation | Price range |
|---|---|
| Heating only, small insulated home | €8,000–11,000 |
| Heating + domestic hot water | €11,000–15,000 |
| High output or complex site | €15,000–18,000 |
Not always included: a buffer tank (€800–2,500), a model with integrated hot water (roughly €1,500–3,000 extra), a 150–300 litre cylinder, the emitters and any electrical upgrade, for example to three-phase. Replacing old high-temperature radiators is estimated at €3,000–8,000 in one source.
What drives the price of a heat pump?
Four factors explain most of the gap between two quotes: required capacity, emitters, technical preparation and finish.
- Capacity: a well-insulated home needs about 6–8 kW, a poorly insulated one 12–16 kW. More capacity means a pricier unit.
- Emitters: underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators work at no extra cost, old radiators do not.
- Preparation: piping, buffer tank, hot-water cylinder, electrical check and commissioning.
- Type of source: drilling makes ground-source by far the most expensive.
- Finish: some installers charge preparatory work and finishing separately.
Figures in the sources are indicative; one guide itself allows a 25–35% margin.
Payback and yearly savings
For air-to-water, sources usually quote 10–15 years; across all types the spread is 5–20 years (up to 20 years for ground-source). The figures come largely from installers and suppliers, so treat them as on the optimistic side.
| Type | Payback | Savings per year |
|---|---|---|
| Air-to-air | 7–10 years | €400–700 |
| Hybrid | 6–8 years | €500–800 |
| Air-to-water | 10–15 years | €600–1,000 |
| Ground-source | 15–20 years | €900–1,200 |
Another source counts only €200–600 saved per year when replacing a gas boiler, depending on COP and gas and electricity prices. Solar panels can shorten payback by 2–4 years; an undersized or oversized unit lengthens it. To compare with the boiler option, see what a boiler replacement costs.
Is a heat pump suitable for an older home being renovated?
Often yes for air-to-water, provided the house is reasonably insulated and the heat emission can run at low temperature.
- Insulation: an EPC class C or better is a good starting point. Below that, insulating first or choosing a hybrid system is advisable. More in insulate first or heat pump first.
- Emitters: underfloor heating runs at 30–35 °C, low-temperature radiators at 45–55 °C. Old cast-iron high-temperature radiators are a problem case.
- Middle ground: for a 1980s home, a well-sized pump with gradual radiator replacement, or a hybrid system.
Ground-source mainly suits new builds with enough land, and air-to-air cannot feed radiators. Always have a professional assess feasibility after a site visit. For the heating side, see our boiler and heating page.
VAT on a heat pump and grants
In a home more than 10 years old, a heat pump is taxed at 6% VAT, provided the home stays in private use and the installer invoices the end consumer directly. A unit you buy yourself without installation stays at 21%. Since 1 January 2026 (until 31 December 2030), a reduced rate also applies to more recent homes. This temporary 6% covers supply with installation of a heat pump with an EU energy label; hybrid heat pumps are excluded (21% in homes under 10 years old).
For a hybrid system in a home over 10 years old, 35% of the price is at 21% and 65% at 6%. In any case, ask for a quote that states the VAT rate item by item: when replacing a boiler, without a split the highest rate can be applied to the whole job. Grants change often; check your region's official portal (vlaanderen.be/mijn-verbouwpremie, energie.wallonie.be or Homegrade in Brussels).
Comparing quotes without surprises
Compare at least three quotes on the same basis: same capacity, same included items, same VAT treatment. A low price without a buffer tank or emitters is not a cheaper offer.
- Ask for a heat-loss calculation, or at least a reasoned choice of capacity.
- Check that inspection, commissioning, electrical connection and any cylinder are listed.
- Have VAT, materials and labour shown separately.
- Ask what happens to the old boiler and existing radiators.
- Check whether preparatory work and finishing are in the price.

How much does a heat pump cost in Belgium in 2026?
Air-to-air costs about €2,000–12,000, air-to-water €5,000–18,000 (usually €8,000–18,000) and ground-source €15,000–30,000+, installation included. The gap depends on capacity, emitters and finish. Compare several quotes.
What does an air-to-water heat pump cost for a typical home?
Heating only in a small insulated home is around €8,000–11,000. With domestic hot water it is €11,000–15,000, and with high output or a complex site €15,000–18,000. A buffer tank and emitters may come on top.
How long does a heat pump take to pay back?
For air-to-water, sources usually quote 10–15 years, and 5–20 years across all types (up to 20 years for ground-source). Solar panels can shorten that by 2–4 years. These are installer estimates, so check them against your own home.
Can a heat pump work with existing radiators?
Yes, if the house is reasonably insulated and the radiators give enough heat at 45–55 °C. Old high-temperature radiators often need replacing. A hybrid heat pump can be an intermediate step.
What VAT rate applies to a heat pump?
6% in a home over 10 years old, if the installer invoices the private customer directly and the home stays in private use. Since 2026, 6% also applies to more recent homes until the end of 2030, but only for supply with installation of a heat pump with an EU energy label; hybrid heat pumps are excluded (21% in homes under 10 years old). A unit you buy yourself without installation stays at 21%.
